RBI raises the repo rate by 25 bp to 5.50%

The six-member Monetary Policy Committee held its 63rd meeting from 5 to 7 October 2026 under Governor Sanjay Malhotra. It voted unanimously to raise the policy repo rate by 25 basis points, from 5.25% to 5.50%. As a result, the Standing Deposit Facility (SDF) rate is now 5.25%, and the Marginal Standing Facility (MSF) rate and the Bank Rate are 5.75%. The Governor cited the renewed West Asia conflict, which pushed the Indian basket of crude oil to an average of US$116.1 a barrel in September, along with a deficient monsoon (13% below the Long Period Average) and early signs that inflation is becoming generalised.

Exam angle: The MPC is a statutory body under Section 45ZB of the RBI Act, 1934. It has six members (three from the RBI, including the Governor, who also has a casting vote, and three external members) and works to a CPI inflation target of 4% ±2%. See Repo, reverse repo and SDF and The Monetary Policy Committee.

MPC changes its stance from neutral to "calibrated tightening"

The MPC changed its stance from neutral to "calibrated tightening" by a 4–2 vote. External members Dr Nagesh Kumar and Prof. Ram Singh voted to keep the stance neutral. The Governor said rate cuts were "off the table in the near term", so the next move can only be a hike or a pause. Between the August and October meetings, system liquidity ran at an average daily surplus of ₹5.9 lakh crore, and the RBI absorbed it through 55 variable rate reverse repo (VRRR) auctions and ₹1.0 lakh crore of OMO sales. The next MPC meeting is scheduled for 2 to 4 December 2026.

Exam angle: The stance tells markets which way rates are likely to move next, and the rate decision and the stance are voted on separately. The other three MPC members are Saugata Bhattacharya, Dr Poonam Gupta (Deputy Governor) and Indranil Bhattacharyya (Executive Director). See How monetary policy works in India.

Account Aggregators made interoperable; bank deposits to appear in the depositories' CAS

The 7 October Statement on Developmental and Regulatory Policies lets customers reach their financial information at any Financial Information Provider through the NBFC-Account Aggregator of their choice, so AAs become interoperable. SEBI-regulated depositories will be able to include bank deposit account details in their Consolidated Account Statement (CAS), so demat holders can see their demat holdings and bank deposits in one place. Both measures are to be in place by 31 December 2026.

Exam angle: Account Aggregators are a category of NBFC regulated by the RBI under its 2016 Master Direction on NBFC-AAs. They move financial data only with the customer's consent and cannot store or sell it.

RBI to set up a Technical Consultative Committee for Financial Markets

The second measure in the 7 October statement is a Technical Consultative Committee for Financial Markets, a forum for structured engagement with market participants. It will cover policy and operational matters in the money, government securities and foreign exchange markets, together with their derivatives and market infrastructure. The RBI will notify its composition and terms of reference separately.

Exam angle: The RBI regulates the money, G-sec and forex markets under the RBI Act, 1934 and FEMA, 1999, while SEBI (headquartered in Mumbai, statutory since 1992) regulates the equity and corporate bond markets.

RBI issues final rules on Credit Valuation Adjustment and SA-CCR

On 7 October the RBI issued the Reserve Bank of India (Commercial Banks – Credit Valuation Adjustment Framework) Directions, 2026, which revise the capital charge for CVA risk. Among the changes, eligible banks may now use a simpler approach. On the same day it issued amendments to the Standardised Approach for Counterparty Credit Risk (SA-CCR), covering items such as multiple margin agreements and banks that act as clearing members on SEBI-recognised exchanges. Both sets of rules take effect from 1 April 2027.

Exam angle: CVA risk is the risk of losses when the credit quality of a derivatives counterparty worsens. It is part of the Basel III capital framework set by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision, which is housed at the BIS in Basel. See Basel III and capital adequacy.

Simpler RBI approval for mutual funds, insurers and pension funds raising stakes in banks

On 1 October the RBI issued final Amendment Directions that simplify approval when mutual funds, insurance companies and pension funds make further acquisitions of "major shareholding" in a banking company. The amendments apply to commercial banks, small finance banks, payments banks and local area banks, and took effect immediately. The draft had been released for comment on 14 July 2026.

Exam angle: Under Section 12B of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949, anyone acquiring a "major shareholding" (5% or more of the paid-up capital or voting rights) in a bank needs the RBI's prior approval. See RBI regulation of banks and NBFCs.

Paytm Payments Bank removed from the Second Schedule of the RBI Act

The RBI announced on 7 October that Paytm Payments Bank Limited has been excluded from the Second Schedule to the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934. The notification is dated 31 July 2026 and was published in the Gazette of India on 7 September 2026.

Exam angle: Banks listed in the Second Schedule are "scheduled banks". They can borrow from the RBI and must keep CRR with it. Payments banks, which grew out of the Nachiket Mor Committee's recommendations, cannot lend and may hold up to ₹2 lakh per customer. See Small finance and payments banks.

That brings it to 24 States and 2 UTs, after nine States in the Q1 pilot and nine States plus Delhi added in Q2.

New orders grew at their fastest pace in seven months, factory hiring returned to growth and business confidence reached a four-month high, but input cost inflation picked up.

Exam angle: S&P Global compiles the PMI for HSBC. A reading above 50 means expansion and below 50 means contraction, and it is a survey-based measure, unlike the IIP, which MoSPI compiles from production data.
