- Jul 2026: The Ancient Buddhist Site of Sarnath (Uttar Pradesh) was inscribed on the World Heritage List, taking India's total to 45.
Exam traps
- World Teachers' Day (5 October, UNESCO) is not India's Teachers' Day (5 September, Dr S. Radhakrishnan's birthday).
- The 1966 Recommendation on teachers is a joint ILO/UNESCO instrument, not UNESCO's alone.
- UNESCO's HQ is Paris; do not confuse it with UNICEF (New York), the ILO (Geneva) or the FAO (Rome).
- The constitution was signed in 1945 but came into force in 1946; questions on the "founding year" usually want 1945.
- Audrey Azoulay is the former Director-General; Khaled El-Enany is the head as of October 2026.
