At a glance

The FAO is the United Nations specialised agency that leads international efforts to defeat hunger and improve food, farming, forestry and fisheries. It gathers global data, publishes flagship "State of the World" reports and helps countries with agricultural policy and food standards.

Key facts

  • Founded: 16 October 1945, Quebec City, Canada
  • Headquarters: Rome, Italy (moved from Washington, DC in 1951)
  • Status: UN specialised agency
  • Members: 194 — 193 countries plus the European Union
  • Director-General: Qu Dongyu (China), in office since August 2019
  • Motto: Fiat panis ("Let there be bread")
  • World Food Day: 16 October every year, marking FAO's founding; first observed in 1981
  • World Food Day 2026 theme: "Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow."
  • Codex Alimentarius Commission: joint FAO/WHO food-standards body (set up by FAO in 1961, approved by WHO in 1963); secretariat in Rome
  • 2026 International Years led by FAO: Rangelands and Pastoralists; the Woman Farmer

How it works

  • Data and reports: FAO publishes yearly "State of the World" reports on food, agriculture, forests and fisheries. The best known is SOFI (The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World), produced jointly by FAO, IFAD, UNICEF, WFP and WHO.
  • Standards: Through the Codex Alimentarius Commission (with WHO), it sets international food standards that national regulators such as India's FSSAI refer to.
  • Awareness: It leads World Food Day and UN International Years on food and farming themes.
  • Field help: It advises governments on farming, nutrition and food emergencies.
