About IIT Bombay (SJMSOM)

IIT Bombay was founded in 1958. It set up its School of Management in 1995 to turn professionals with a technology background into what it calls "Renaissance Leaders". In 2000 the school was renamed after Dr Shailesh J. Mehta, a distinguished IIT Bombay alumnus and benefactor.

The school says its edge is its link with IIT Bombay's engineering and science departments, where MBA students can take electives. The curriculum adds technology management courses such as Technology Policy and R&D Management, and a "Mission, Vision and Leadership" course mentored by business leaders. The school also hosts a Centre for Capital Markets and research labs backed by Citadel Securities and Motilal Oswal.

The MBA is small. The school's FAQ says it has 26 core faculty for about 250 MBA students, a ratio of roughly 1:9.6 before counting visiting and adjunct faculty. In NIRF 2025 it placed 14th in Management with a score of 65.82, with its strongest parameter scores in graduation outcomes (77.01) and teaching, learning and resources (74.05).

Programmes

The school's brochure lists:

  • MBA (flagship, since 1995): a two-year general MBA. Students can also specialise in Finance or Operations Management.
  • PhD (since 1995): a doctoral programme the school plans to expand.
  • Joint Executive MBA (since 2015): offered with Olin Business School, Washington University, for working executives.
  • B.Tech Minor in Management (since 2008): for IIT Bombay undergraduates.
  • Interdisciplinary Dual Degree Programme (IDDDP, since 2020): for IIT Bombay undergraduates moving into management.
  • Management development programmes: short and long programmes, including company-specific training.

The MBA runs over eight terms. In the first four terms, students take 23 courses across all management disciplines, with an optional one-month winter project after the first two terms. A two-month summer project follows the first year. The last four terms combine a few core courses with a wide choice of electives.

Admissions and eligibility

For the 2026-28 batch, eligibility for candidates applying from India was:

  • a bachelor's degree with at least 60% marks or a CPI of 6.5 out of 10 (55% or CPI 6.0 for SC, ST and PwD), from a recognised university or equivalent;
  • if you are in your final year, an aggregate of at least 60% (55% for SC/ST/PwD) up to the latest exam with results;
  • a valid CAT score.

The MBA is open to graduates of all disciplines.

International applicants with a foreign passport or an OCI/PIO card apply with a valid GMAT score. TOEFL/IELTS is waived for those whose degree was taught in English. There are no reserved seats for sponsored candidates.

For 2026-28, applications opened on 1 January 2026 and interviews ran from 5 to 8 March 2026.

Selection process

SJMSOM publishes a two-phase process. For the 2026-28 batch:

Phase 1: shortlisting for the personal interview

Component Weight
CAT 2025 overall scaled score 75%
Academic profile 20%
Work experience 5%

The school notes that women applicants may be shortlisted to improve gender diversity, without any extra weight. Its FAQ says cut-offs, including any sectional cut-offs, are decided only after applications close. It does not publish a fixed minimum percentile in advance.

Phase 2: final merit list

Component Weight
CAT 2025 overall scaled score 42.5%
Personal interview 42.5%
Graduation marks 5%
Work experience 5%
Extra-curricular achievements 3%
Postgraduate degree 2%

Some of the scoring rules:

  • CAT: your scaled score is divided by 198 and multiplied by 42.5.
  • Interview: scores are adjusted for differences between panels.
  • Graduation: marks above 60% earn between 3 and 5 points, with no difference between disciplines.
  • Extra-curriculars: 3 points for a national-level winner or runner-up, 2 for state level, and 1 for representing your university. You must bring original certificates to the interview.

How to prepare for IIT Bombay (SJMSOM)

  • Push your overall CAT score. It carries 75% of the shortlist and 42.5% of the final score. Sectional cut-offs are not announced in advance, so avoid an obviously weak section. Our CAT 2026 preparation guide sets out a plan, and analysing your mocks helps you find where marks are leaking.
  • Read scaled scores and percentiles correctly. SJMSOM uses the scaled score, not the percentile. CAT percentile vs percentage explains how they relate.
  • Prepare for the interview. The PI is worth 42.5% of the final score. Be ready to explain your academic choices, your work, and why a technology-linked MBA fits you. Expect questions from your undergraduate subjects and current business news.

No preparation plan guarantees a shortlist or an offer. Use the official criteria for your year.
