IIM Raipur is one of the newer IIMs, set up by the Government of India in 2010, and it now ranks 15th in the NIRF 2025 Management ranking. It suits CAT takers who want a full IIM MBA on a large residential campus, and its published selection formula gives real weight to Class X and XII marks, work experience and the interview, so it rewards a consistent profile as much as a single strong CAT score.

About IIM Raipur

According to the institute, IIM Raipur was set up in 2010 by the Government of India through the Ministry of Human Resource Development (now the Ministry of Education), in Raipur, the capital of Chhattisgarh. The Government of Chhattisgarh gave it more than 200 acres of land for its campus in Atal Nagar. The institute describes the campus as modern architecture combined with the culture and heritage of the state.

Like the other IIMs, it is an Institute of National Importance under the IIM Act, 2017. In NIRF 2025 its strongest parameters were graduation outcomes (89.50) and outreach and inclusivity (80.73); perception (16.66) was its weakest. The NIRF data also shows an unusual gender mix: of 713 students in the two-year programme, 436 were women, and 700 came from outside Chhattisgarh.

Programmes

  • MBA (flagship): a two-year, full-time, residential programme open to graduates of all disciplines.
  • MBA in Public Policy and Governance: run with the Government of Chhattisgarh under the Chief Minister's Good Governance Fellowship, for Chhattisgarh-domiciled candidates only. The state pays full tuition and a Rs 50,000 monthly stipend.
  • Executive MBA: a blended on-campus and online programme for working executives.
  • Doctoral Programme in Management (DPM): a full-time doctoral programme, run since 2012-13 (previously called the Fellow Programme in Management).
  • PhD (Practice Track): a doctoral route for working professionals.
  • Executive education: management development programmes and customised in-company programmes.

Admissions and eligibility

For the 2026-28 batch, candidates applied through the Joint Admission Process 2026 (JAP 2026). JAP was run jointly by IIM Raipur, IIM Kashipur, IIM Ranchi and IIM Tiruchirappalli. The steps were:

  1. Take CAT 2025.
  2. Register on the JAP 2026 portal after receiving the invitation email that followed the CAT results.
  3. Shortlisting for the personal interview (PI) and the PI itself were conducted jointly by the four IIMs.
  4. IIM Raipur then prepared its own category-wise merit list.

To appear on the merit list, you need these minimum marks in graduation:

Category Minimum graduation marks
General, EWS, NC-OBC 60%
SC 50%
ST, PwD 45%

Reservation follows Government of India norms. JAP shortlisting criteria, including any minimum CAT percentiles, sit in the common JAP policy, which we could not open; check it on the JAP portal for your cycle, as the 2027-29 process may change.

Selection process

IIM Raipur's admission policy for the 2026-28 batch builds the final merit list from a score out of 150:

Component Marks
CAT 2025 Index Score 50
Personal interview 40
Class X percentage 15
Class XII / diploma percentage 15
Work experience 15
Gender diversity (female and transgender candidates) 8
Profile score 5
Academic diversity 2

The rules for each component:

  • CAT Index Score: combines the scaled percentiles of the three CAT sections and the overall percentile, with equal weights.
  • Class X and XII: scored in bands, from 0 below 60% up to 15 for 95% and above. For example, 80-85% earns 8 marks and 90-95% earns 12.
  • Work experience: counted up to 31 December 2025. Under 12 months scores nothing. Scores then rise by 0.6 a month to a maximum of 15 for 36-42 months, and fall to 10 for 43-48 months and 5 beyond 48 months.
  • Profile score: 4 marks for an undergraduate degree from a top-ten NIRF 2025 institution in listed categories, and 1 mark for CFA Level 1, 2 or 3.
  • Diversity scores: a candidate can get either the gender diversity score or the academic diversity score, not both. Academic diversity covers commerce, arts, science, medicine and professional degrees listed in the policy's annexure.
  • Personal interview: assesses academics, awareness, attitude, personality, communication and quality of work experience; scores are normalised.

Past academics and work experience together carry 45 of the 150 marks, nearly as much as CAT itself (50).

The International Relations Committee runs exchanges. Listed partners include HHL Leipzig and ISM Dortmund (Germany), ESC Troyes and IPAG (France), ALBA (Greece), SolBridge (South Korea), IPADE (Mexico) and CENTRUM Catolica (Peru). The 2026-28 fee also includes a rural immersion module.

How to prepare for IIM Raipur

  • Get a balanced CAT score. The CAT Index Score gives equal weight to the three sectional percentiles and the overall percentile, so one weak section pulls down a quarter or more of your CAT marks. Our CAT 2026 preparation guide and syllabus breakdown can help you plan.
  • Know your fixed scores. Your Class X and XII marks are already decided, so work out where you fall in the bands and how much the CAT and interview have to make up. If you are working, the work-experience scale peaks at 36-42 months.
  • Learn to read percentiles. How CAT percentiles work helps you estimate what your score means for a composite like this one. Track your progress with timed mocks and a proper review; see how to analyse CAT mocks.
  • Prepare for the interview. The PI carries 40 of 150 marks. Be ready to discuss your academics, your work in detail (the panel looks at its quality, not just its length), current affairs and your reasons for an MBA.

No preparation plan guarantees a call or an admission. Treat these as ways to improve your odds.
