About IIT Delhi (DMS)
DMS traces its roots to an idea first floated at IIT Delhi in 1963. Over the following decades, management teaching moved through an M.Tech in Management Systems and a series of centres. In June 1993 the Department of Management Studies was formally created by amending the IIT Delhi statutes. DMS moved from the M.Tech format to an MBA in 1997 and added an MBA in Telecommunication Systems Management in 2000.
Being part of IIT Delhi shapes the programme. DMS points to the institute's research culture, the large share of engineers in its classes and its location in the capital, which brings frequent guest lectures and contact with business, policy and academia. The 2023-25 placement report says 67% of that batch were engineers and the average prior work experience was 19.7 months.
The MBA is taught by DMS faculty organised in subject areas, supported by visiting practitioners. DMS also runs social sector attachments through its Nivah initiative. Annual student-run conclaves cover strategy, HR, operations, finance and marketing.

Campus and student life
DMS sits in Vishwakarma Bhavan on the IIT Delhi campus in Hauz Khas. MBA students can use the wider institute's facilities and student activity centre. Student life runs through DMS clubs and committees. The department hosts several annual student-run events, including Building India Inc., a media conclave, Nivah Horizon (HR), Strategia (strategy and consulting), Opera (operations) and Confluence (finance and marketing). Batches are small compared with the larger IIMs, so classes and placement cohorts are more compact.
How to prepare for IIT Delhi (DMS)
DMS's formula is driven by your overall CAT score: it carries 65 of the 100 shortlisting points and 40 of the 100 final points. Because it uses the raw overall score rather than sectional percentiles, a strong total matters most. Still, avoid a very weak section, because other institutes you apply to may have sectional cut-offs. Our CAT 2026 preparation guide and mock analysis guide help you raise your overall score efficiently. CAT percentile vs percentage explains why raw scores and percentiles behave differently.
Academic marks are scored in bands, and the top band needs 90% or more. Work experience is rewarded most between 19 and 36 months. Graduates of IITs, NITs and other MoE-funded technical institutions or Institutes of National Importance earn extra points.
In the final admission index, the interview and extra-curricular activities carry 40%. Prepare to talk about your projects, work and activities in detail, and be ready for questions linking technology and business.
