The Common Management Admission Test (CMAT) is a national-level entrance test for admission to management programmes, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) since 2019; until 2018 it was run by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). According to the CMAT 2026 information bulletin, the score is accepted by AICTE-approved institutions, university departments, constituent colleges and affiliated colleges. It suits graduates (and final-year students) who want a second national score alongside CAT, particularly for AICTE-approved PGDM institutes and Maharashtra's centralised MBA/MMS admissions. NTA had not published a CMAT 2027 bulletin when this guide was written, so the details below are from CMAT 2026, the latest edition. Confirm everything on cmat.nta.nic.in before you apply.

Exam pattern
This is the scheme of examination in the CMAT 2026 information bulletin.
| Section | Questions | Marks | What it tests |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quantitative Techniques and Data Interpretation | 20 | 80 | Numerical problem-solving and data interpretation |
| Logical Reasoning | 20 | 80 | Logical and analytical reasoning |
| Language Comprehension | 20 | 80 | Reading comprehension and English usage |
| General Awareness | 20 | 80 | Current affairs and general knowledge |
| Innovation & Entrepreneurship | 20 | 80 | Concepts of innovation and entrepreneurship |
| Total | 100 | 400 |
Notes on the pattern (CMAT 2026):
- Marking. Every question carries four marks. A correct answer earns 4, a wrong answer loses 1, and an unanswered question scores 0. If a question is dropped after the answer-key challenge, all candidates get full marks for it.
- Timing. The bulletin gives a total duration of 180 minutes. It does not set out sectional time limits.
- Medium. The question paper is in English only.
- Shifts and normalisation. The bulletin says the test may be held in more than one shift; if it is, raw marks are converted to NTA percentile scores. CMAT 2026 actually ran in a single shift.
- Ties. Candidates with the same score are ranked by date of birth, older first.
- Fee (CMAT 2026). ₹2,500 for General (UR) male candidates; ₹1,250 for female candidates, Gen-EWS, SC, ST, PwD/PwBD, OBC-NCL and third-gender candidates, plus bank charges and GST.
The CMAT 2026 press release reports 53,453 registered candidates and 41,872 who appeared, across 110 cities.
What each section tests
The bulletin names the five sections and the marking but publishes no topic-by-topic syllabus. The descriptions below follow the section names. NTA posts candidates' question papers and recorded responses during the answer-key challenge, and you should use those to see the real question types.
Quantitative Techniques and Data Interpretation
Numerical problem-solving together with interpreting data. NTA does not list the topics, so use the released question papers to see which areas recur.
Logical Reasoning
Reasoning questions that ask you to work out conclusions, arrangements and relationships from given information.
Language Comprehension
Reading passages and English-language questions on meaning, usage and vocabulary.
General Awareness
Current affairs and static general knowledge. It is the least predictable section, and preparing for it means regular reading over months rather than practising technique.
Innovation & Entrepreneurship
NTA publishes no official topic list for this section. As reported by Cracku's question bank of CMAT papers (2021–2025), questions are concept-based, and recurring themes include entrepreneur versus intrapreneur, incremental and disruptive innovation, design thinking, the lean start-up and minimum viable product, angel and venture capital funding, incubators and accelerators, Start-up India, and pitch decks. Treat this as a guide to past papers, not a syllabus.
How it compares with CAT
CMAT and CAT both test quantitative, reasoning and verbal skills, so CAT preparation covers three of CMAT's five sections. The differences matter, though.
| CMAT 2026 | CAT | |
|---|---|---|
| Conducted by | NTA | The IIMs |
| Sections | Five, including General Awareness and Innovation & Entrepreneurship | VARC, DILR, QA |
| General knowledge | Yes, 20 questions | No |
| Marking | +4 / −1 on every question | See our CAT guide |
| Timing in the year | Late January (CMAT 2026) | See our CAT guide |
| Used by | AICTE-approved institutes; Maharashtra CAP | IIMs and many other B-schools |
Some general points, which you should treat as tendencies rather than rules:
- Two sections have no CAT equivalent. General Awareness and Innovation & Entrepreneurship together carry 160 of the 400 marks, so ignoring them is not an option.
- One clock for the whole paper. The CMAT 2026 bulletin gives a single 180-minute duration for 100 questions and does not describe sectional time limits, so you decide how to spread your time.
- Negative marking is uniform. Every wrong answer costs a quarter of a correct answer's value, so guessing blindly on GK questions is risky.
See our CAT guide for the CAT format.
How Pareto Academy helps
| CMAT section | Covered by Pareto? | What to use |
|---|---|---|
| Quantitative Techniques | Yes | Quant questions, formula sheet, improve your Quant score |
| Data Interpretation | Yes | DILR questions |
| Logical Reasoning | Partly | DILR questions and arrangement puzzles; shorter verbal-reasoning items are not covered yet |
| Language Comprehension | Yes | VARC questions, daily reading, RC strategy; grammar and vocabulary drills are limited |
| General Awareness | Not yet | Regular newspaper reading |
| Innovation & Entrepreneurship | Not yet | NTA's released question papers and standard references on entrepreneurship |
| CMAT-pattern mocks | Not yet | Our mocks follow the CAT pattern; use NTA's released papers to practise the CMAT format |
For General Awareness, read a national newspaper daily and keep short notes on business, economy and government schemes. For Innovation & Entrepreneurship, work through NTA's released question papers and an introductory entrepreneurship text so that the terms are familiar.
Colleges that accept it
The CMAT 2026 bulletin states that the score is accepted by all AICTE-approved institutions, university departments, constituent colleges and affiliated colleges. Each institute sets its own cut-off and selection process, and some well-known institutes do not use CMAT, so check every institute's admissions page. Examples verified on official sites:
- Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (JBIMS), Mumbai – its admissions page lists MAH-CET, CMAT and CAT as the qualifying exams for the MMS, with admission through Maharashtra's centralised admission process (CAP).
- Maharashtra MBA/MMS CAP – the State CET Cell's 2025-26 admission brochure allots All India candidature seats in MBA/MMS on percentile in MAH-CET, CAT or CMAT. This covers government, university and unaided management institutes in Maharashtra.
- Birla Institute of Management Technology (BIMTECH), Greater Noida – accepts a valid CMAT 2027 score for its 2027-29 PGDM programmes.

Preparation tips
- Split your time by marks, not comfort. Each section is worth 80 marks. A CAT-focused candidate is often strong in three sections and weak in two; the weak two are where marks are easiest to gain.
- Start General Awareness early. Twenty minutes of news reading a day for three months beats a crash course in January. Note key appointments, schemes, economic data and business news.
- Learn Innovation & Entrepreneurship as vocabulary. Most questions test whether you know what a term means. Build a glossary of funding stages, innovation types and start-up concepts.
- Practise accuracy. With −1 for a wrong answer, a careless error costs you five marks compared with a correct answer. Attempt questions you can eliminate down to one or two options, and skip pure guesses.
- Use NTA's released papers. Practise on real CMAT question papers under a 180-minute limit to learn the format.
- Keep your CAT preparation going. Quant, DI, reasoning and reading practice for CAT transfers directly.
