At a glance
A Global Capability Centre (GCC) is a unit that a multinational company sets up and owns in another country to do work for the parent group, such as software, engineering, research, analytics, finance or customer operations. Unlike an outsourcing firm, the GCC is part of the company itself. India hosts the largest number of GCCs in the world, and they are a growing source of high-skill jobs and services exports.
Key facts
- Meaning: an offshore, company-owned centre serving the parent's global operations
- Older name: captive centre, or Global In-house Centre (GIC)
- Number in India (FY2026, NASSCOM–Zinnov): about 2,117 GCCs, across about 3,728 units
- Employees: about 2.36 million (FY2026)
- Market size: about US$98 billion (FY2026 estimate)
- Largest hub: Bengaluru (more than a quarter of units)
- Other major hubs: Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai, Delhi-NCR, Mumbai
- Policy support: Union Budget 2025-26 announced national guidance to help states attract GCCs to Tier-2 cities
- Commerce Minister (who cites the 2,100+ figure): Piyush Goyal
How it works
GCC vs outsourcing:
| GCC (captive) | IT/BPO outsourcing | |
|---|---|---|
| Ownership | Parent multinational | Third-party vendor (e.g. an Indian IT firm) |
| Work | Parent's own functions, often core R&D and product | Contracted services for many clients |
| Example | A bank's technology centre in Hyderabad | An Indian IT firm serving that bank |
Why India: a large pool of engineering and finance graduates, lower costs, time-zone coverage and an existing IT-services base. GCCs have moved from back-office work to product development, AI, cybersecurity and engineering design.
Who sets them up: banks and financial firms (BFSI), technology, automotive, pharma and retail multinationals. Hyderabad has drawn many new BFSI GCCs.
Policy: several states have dedicated GCC policies offering incentives, and the Centre's 2025-26 Budget asked for a national framework to spread GCCs beyond the big metros.
Recent developments
- 24 Oct 2026: Ending the Germany leg of his visit, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said India now has more than 2,100 GCCs and that German companies see India as a base for manufacturing, R&D and innovation, not just a market.
Exam traps
- A GCC is owned by the multinational; it is not an outsourcing contract.
- GCCs earn services export revenue for India but are not "Special Economic Zones"; many sit in SEZs or IT parks, but the two are different ideas.
- Bengaluru, not Hyderabad, has the largest share of GCCs; Hyderabad leads in new BFSI GCCs.
- "GCC" here is not the Gulf Cooperation Council (the six-nation Gulf bloc).
Quick check
- Q: Roughly how many GCCs does India have in 2026? A: More than 2,100.
- Q: Which city is India's largest GCC hub? A: Bengaluru.
- Q: Is a GCC an outsourcing vendor? A: No, it is owned by the parent multinational.
