About IIM Mumbai

The Government of India set up the National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) in 1963 with help from the United Nations Development Programme and the International Labour Organization. It now operates as IIM Mumbai; the institute's own Acts page lists the IIM Act, 2017 and the IIM (Amendment) Act, 2023 among its governing documents. The Director is Prof. Manoj K. Tiwari.

The institute says its campus is surrounded on three sides by lakes, which has earned it the nickname "God's Own Campus". It reports more than 60 faculty and around 1,200 students across its programmes. Its NITIE heritage still shapes the academic profile. IIM Mumbai hosts the Centre of Excellence in Logistics and Supply Chain Management and describes itself as the nodal hub for logistics capacity building under the PM Gati Shakti plan. It also lists faculty interactions with MIT and the Kellogg School of Management.

Programmes

  • MBA: the flagship two-year residential programme, covering finance, marketing, operations, HR and analytics.
  • MBA (Operations and Supply Chain Management): a two-year programme open to engineering graduates and a short list of quantitative degrees.
  • MBA (Sustainability Management): a two-year programme with the same general eligibility as the MBA.
  • Executive and one-year programmes: MBA-PGPEx and the PGDEx-VLFM manufacturing leadership programme, which the institute runs with IIT Delhi, among others.
  • Doctoral: a regular PhD programme and an Executive PhD.
  • BS in Digital Science and Business Management: an undergraduate programme (batch 2026-30).

Admissions and eligibility

For the 2026-28 MBA, you need a bachelor's degree with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA (45% for SC, ST and PwD candidates) from a recognised university. The degree must involve at least three years of study after Class 12. Final-year students can apply if they meet the conditions in the policy.

You apply through CAT. For the 2026-28 batch that meant CAT 2025, and the application fee was Rs 2,000 (Rs 1,000 for SC, ST, EWS and PwD candidates). There is also a separate MBA route through GMAT, which requires a test-centre GMAT score no more than five years old.

The MBA-OSCM has narrower eligibility. You need a full-time engineering or technology degree with 50% aggregate, or one of a few listed degrees such as an MSc in Mathematics or Statistics. Reservation follows Government of India norms: 27% NC-OBC, 15% SC, 7.5% ST, 5% PwD and up to 10% EWS.

Selection process

The process below comes from the official admission policy for the MBA, batch 2026-28 (CAT 2025). IIM Mumbai had not yet published a 2027-29 policy when we checked, so look out for changes.

Stage I: minimum CAT percentiles. You must clear every sectional cut-off as well as the overall one:

Category VARC DILR QA Overall
Open 80 80 75 85
NC-OBC / EWS 70 65 65 75
SC 65 60 60 70
ST 55 55 55 65
PwD 45 45 45 55

The policy says actual cut-offs may be much higher than these minimums, because they depend on how many candidates are called in each category.

Stage II: shortlisting for the personal interview. This uses your CAT 2025 score, sectional cut-offs and reservation category.

Stage III: final selection. A composite score is built from:

  • CAT score: 60
  • Personal interview: 20
  • Academic Performance and Work Experience (APWE) score: 20

The APWE score uses rating points for Class 10, Class 12 (banded by stream) and your bachelor's degree (banded by discipline). It also gives points for work experience as on 31 December 2025, but nothing for under 12 months. The policy calls these weights tentative.

Fees and financial aid

For the MBA batch 2026-28, the official admissions page gives a gross programme fee of Rs 25.00 lakh per student. A refundable caution money deposit of Rs 50,000 is payable at admission. Mess charges and the mess deposit are separate, and mess fees are paid a year in advance. The same Rs 25.00 lakh figure is listed for MBA-OSCM and MBA-SM. For comparison, the 2025-27 batch paid Rs 21.00 lakh.

We could not find a scholarship scheme for MBA students on the official site. In the NIRF 2025 data, IIM Mumbai reported some students in its two-year PG programmes receiving full tuition-fee reimbursement from government, institutional and private sources. Ask the admissions office about current need-based aid before you accept an offer.

Placements

NIRF 2025 data. For the two-year PG programmes, IIM Mumbai reported a median salary of Rs 33 lakh per annum for the cohort graduating in 2023-24. That year 536 students graduated and 536 were placed. The medians for the two earlier graduating years were Rs 32 lakh (2022-23) and Rs 31 lakh (2021-22).

Final placement report, batch 2024-26. The official report covers 505 students (299 MBA, 178 MBA-OSCM and 28 MBA-SM). It lists:

  • Average CTC: Rs 31.4 lakh per annum
  • Highest CTC: Rs 71.4 lakh per annum
  • Mean of the top 10%: Rs 47.5 lakh; mean of the top 20%: Rs 41.4 lakh
  • 208 recruiting companies, 66 of them new
  • 179 pre-placement offers

The report does not say whether the figures were audited. It groups recruiters into BFSI, consulting, e-commerce and retail, FMCG, and IT and analytics. Firms named include Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan Chase, Kearney, ZS Associates, Hindustan Unilever, Amazon and Microsoft.

Placement figures vary by year and role; read the official report.

Campus and student life

The campus is on Vihar Lake Road in Powai. The institute says the MBA, MBA-OSCM and MBA-SM are fully residential, with furnished double-occupancy hostel rooms, a 200-seat auditorium and facilities for cricket, basketball, volleyball, badminton and table tennis. Student bodies listed on the website include the Placement Committee, Cultural Committee, Sports Committee, Enactus, the investment club Arth, the Marketing Interest Group and the Prerana management group. The International Relations Committee handles exchanges, and the institute mentions an exchange programme with Ecole Centrale de Lille and an immersion programme with the University of Washington.

How to prepare for IIM Mumbai

Every CAT section has its own floor at IIM Mumbai, and the open-category QA minimum is lower than VARC and DILR. That makes balance across sections more important than a spike in one. If your mocks show a weak section, fix it early with a structured plan such as our CAT 2026 preparation guide and regular mock analysis.

The final composite gives CAT 60% of the weight, so a strong overall score carries you a long way. Academics and work experience still count for 20%. You cannot change your Class 10 and 12 marks, but you can see from the APWE tables where you stand, and you can earn work-experience points once you have 12 months or more. Also read how CAT percentiles relate to scores so the cut-off table makes sense.

Expect the personal interview to probe your academic background and any work experience. Interest in operations, supply chain or sustainability fits the institute's identity, but only if it is genuine. No cut-off or preparation route guarantees a call or an offer.
